Microsoft’s $399 Surface Go

From Peter Bright at Ars Technica:

Compared to the Surface Pro, it has a smaller screen (10in, 1800×1200)

And

Even with the reduced price, it retains all the major Surface design elements: a variable position kickstand, 8MP rear/5MP front cameras with Windows Hello facial recognition, the Surface Connect magnetic charging and dock port, and a 10-finger multitouch screen with Surface Pen support.

And

Surface Go Type Covers are $99 or $129 for the fabric-covered Alcantara versions, and the mouse is $34.99.

Competition is good, but the Surface Go won’t come with a keyboard, mouse, or even Surface Pen. You could argue neither does the iPad, but iOS was designed for sausage fingers from the get-go. Windows wasn’t and is still littered with UX controls that are absurdly small for touch. Just look at this screenshot of OneNote featured on Microsoft’s own Surface webpage. Can you imagine trying to hit those tiny bold, italic, and underline buttons on a 10″ screen? You don’t need a pointing device to use iOS, but I’d argue you do in Windows.

I really admire what the Microsoft Hardware group is doing, but from my view the problem with the Surface isn’t with the hardware. It’s Windows
