I was very excited when I read that Apple’s recent trackpad update added window dragging to the 3 finger gesture. Upon trying the feature, I found myself entirely disappointed. The problem is that the pointer still needs to be over the title/toolbar of the top window in order for dragging to work. Half the work of dragging windows is navigating to that top area which is sometimes as small as 10 pixels. Since the 3 finger gesture is unique, the whole window could be the draggable area. In addition, any window could be draggable, not just the one on in focus. Apple has already implemented scrolling unfocused windows so why not dragging? I am sure this request may be made obsolete by some new multitouch mechanism Apple is brewing, but it seems like this tweak would be an easy stop-gap with a big usability payout.
