Precision Trackpad Support on PCs

In an article primarily about Chrome’s new feature that blocks auto playing videos with sound, The Verge made passing mention of the browser’s upcoming support for “precision trackpads”1 and linked to this Reddit.

FINALLY! Does it scroll like Edge too?

That’s the main reason I use Edge – it scrolls and zooms just like Safari on a MacBook or browsers on smartphones.

As someone who’s long derided PC trackpads, I’m honesty glad to see the improvement. I understand why applications might need to be updated to support gestures that tie to new behaviors such as pinch to zoom, but I would think the two-finger scrolling would come free. It’s particularly shocking to me that what is possibly the most popular application on Windows is just now adding support, especially given precision trackpad capabilities were added around 3 years ago with Windows 10.

  1. While not a fan of Apple’s “magic” branding, I think “precision” is much worse. Not having a “Magic Trackpad” means having a plain trackpad. Not the best, but not horrible. Not having a precision trackpad means being stuck with an imprecise trackpad. Well… maybe the PC world is just being honest.
